This resumé of the history of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Latvian Congregation is excerpted 1998 from the booklet authored by Jānis Mezaks : A retrospective of 50 years (in the life) of the congregation [Mežaks, Jānis ATSKATS UZ DRAUDZES PIECDESMIT GADIEM] DRAUDZES DIBINĀŠANA UN „MĀJVIETAS” Sv. Jāņa ev.-lut. draudze Toronto ir pirmā latviešu draudze Kanadā, ko dibinājuši latvieši šai zemē pēc Otrā pasaules kaŗa. 1948. gada rudenī Toronto un tās tuvākajā apkārtnē darbu un apmešanās vietu bija atraduši jau vairāki simti latviešu. Arī svešumā viņi vēlējās turēties kopā un Dievu lūgt savā mātes valodā. Pirmais Dievkalpojums mācītāja Ādolfa Gaudiņa vadībā Toronto notika 1948. gada 18. novembrī Sv. Jāņa baznīcā, 274 Concord Avenue, piedaloties ap 200 Dievlūdzējiem. Tad arī radusies doma par latviešu draudzes dibināšanu. Draudzes dibināšanas sapulce ar 51 dalībnieku notika Sv. Jāņa baznīcā 1948. gada 12. decembri. Daži no sapulces dalībniekiem nemaz nav bijuši luterāņi, bet, ņemot vērā īpatnējos apstākļus, viņi nacionālo piederību stādījuši pāri konfesionālai piederībai. Sapulces dalībnieki nolēma dibināt latviešu luterāņu draudzi, izvēloties tai Sv. Jāņa vārdu. Draudzes dibināšanu sirsnīgi atbalstīja arī Toronto kanadiešu Sv. Jāņa draudzes mācītājs Ernests Hāns. No četriem kandidātiem mācītāja amatam ar 50 balsīm izraudzīja Arnoldu Lūsi, kas tad vēl atradās Vacijā. Izraudzīja arī pirmo draudzes valdi: Oskars Dzērvītis – priekšnieks, Osvalds Breņķis -priekšnieka vietnieks, Fridrichs Freibergs -sekretārs, Kārlis Vītiņš – kasieris un Elza Koks-Skuja – valdes locekle. Pirmajos gados draudze saņēma materiālu atbalstu no luterāņu Misuri sinodes, kā arī dievkalpojumi notika tai piederošos dievnamos -Sv. Jāņa baznīcā un Sv. Trīsvienības baznīcā. Kaut arī Misuri sinodes vadība vairākkārt aicināja mūsu draudzi iestāties šai sinodē, draudze to nedarīja, uzturot ar sinodi tikai kristīgas draudzības attieksmes. Mācītāja Arnolda Lūša pirmais Dievkalpojums notika 1949. gada 28. augustā Sv. Jāņa baznica. Pārpildītajā baznīcā starp vairāk kā 400 Dievlūdzējiem bija arī Latvijas ģenerālkonsuls R.N. Braisons ar kundzi. Mācītāja un draudzes padomes amatā ievešana notika tā paša gada 11. septembrī. Sākās ražena darba posms. Piecdesmit gados Toronto Sv. Jāņa ev.- lut. latviešu draudze ir izaugusi par ievērojamu Kristiešu kopību. Draudzei augot, arvien kuplāk sazarojies tās darbības lauks. FOUNDING OF THE CONGREGATION AND WORSHIP The first worship service of the congregation took place in St. John’s Lutheran Church, 274 Concord Avenue, Toronto on November 18 1948 with the Reverand Adolfs Gaudins leading the service (simultaneously marking the 30th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence of Latvia). Of the several hundred Latvians who had chosen the Toronto area for their new home, two hundred attended the service and the idea was broached for the founding of a congregation for Latvian-speaking immigrants to Canada. By December 12, 1948, area Latvians had founded the first Latvian congregation in Canada with the support of Reverend Ernest Hahn of St. John’s Lutheran Church. The new congregation chose the name Sv. Jāņa ev.-lut. Draudze (St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran (Latvian) Congregation). Of four candidates for pastor of the new congregation, Arnolds Lusis, who, at the time, was still in a displaced persons’ camp in Germany, was chosen. On this occasion, the first council was also elected under the leadership of Oskars Dzervitis. Pastor Lusis’s first worship service took place on August 28, 1949 with R.N Bryson, the consul of Latvia in Canada and 400 worshippers in attendance. Rev. Lusis’s investiture took place on September 11 of that year. With the material support of the Missouri Synod of the Lutheran Church, the congregation was able to hold services in two of its member churches: St. John’s and Trinity Church on Sherbourne Avenue for many years. During the 1950s and 1960s, the congregation enjoyed vibrant growth with the addition of many working groups: Sunday School, Women’s Auxiliary, the Good Samaritan group, choir, youth group and ‘Saulaine’ the country retreat and children’s summer camp. Par draudzes dibināšanas sapulci stāsta Līvija Jansone: “tagadējo draudzes priekšnieku – J.M.). Kārlim nemaz nepatika tā doma, ka jāatstāj ratiņi un jāiet iekšā. To viņš parādīja, skaļi protestēdams. Toreiz bija citādāki laiki nekā tagad; tad bērnus patika labāk redzēt, ne dzirdēt. Radās problēma —ko darīt? Ar viru norunāļām, ka viņš ies iekšā parakstīties, bet es ar Kārli palikšu ārā pagaidīt. Ja nebus pietiekams skaits parakstu, tad vīrs paliks pie Kārļa, un es iešu iekšā paraksfities. Bet tad vīrs nāca ārā un teica, ka viss ir kārtībā.” L ai vieglāk būtu apskatīt mūsu draudzes vēsturi tīkla formātā, tā ir sadalīta par atseviš ķiem interešu tēmatiem. Tomēr viss tas bija saistīts ar lieliem ierobežojumiem. Gūtā pieredze draudzes darbiniekus pārliecināja, ka vienīgais atrisinājums telpu jautājumam var būt – sava Dievnama iegāde. Šai sakarībā draudzes locekļu pilnsapulce 1956. gadā nolēma, ka katram draudzes loceklim jāmaksā 50 centus mēnesī Dievnama iegādes fondā. Uzzini vairāk Building the Church Although the congregation was grateful for the use of St. John’s Church on Concord and Trinity Church on Sherbourne, services there presented certain limitations, such as the need for afternoon services. As early as 1956, the council recognized the need for the congregation to have its own church building and thus passed motion that each member of the congregation make a monthly donation of 50 cents toward the acquisition of our own ‘home’.... Special Worship Services During the year we celebrate several special worship services in which the Latvian community thanks God for His acts of grace and mercy in the history of the Latvian people and our community here in Toronto. On the first Sunday of March, the Latvian community remembers Major Oskars Kalpaks and all those who fought valiantly in 1918-1919 and sacrificed their lives to secure a free Latvia. The service is distinguished by the presence of members of Latvian fraternities and their colours, marking the special role of fraternity members in Kalpak’s battalion and the battles for Latvian freedom In celebration of our Latvian heritage, an ecumenical worship service is usually held as part of the Latvian Song Festival programme. On the 18th of November, Latvians throughout the world remember the proclamation of a free Latvia in 1919 and give thanks to God for the gift of freedom. During the years of brutal and illegal Soviet occupation of Latvia (1943-1993), this memorial service was often very solemn, remembering those who still suffered under communist rule. However, after Latvia regained her independence in 1993, the mood of our November 18th worship has been one of promise and celebration. On the Sunday closest to June 14th, St. John’s congregation remembers the thousands of innocent victims of Soviet communist oppression who were deported during the terrible year of 1941 and in subsequent terror campaigns during the illegal Soviet occupation of Latvia. The Fourth Sunday of Advent is an informal morning worship service of hymns and readings, followed by the decoration of the Christmas tree and the altar area. It is a service for the whole family with young and old participating in the fun – and enjoying carols around the grand piano in the church, the mulled wine, hot chocolate and traditional Christmas treats as well!

Churches-on-the-Hill Foodbank Churches-on-the-Hill Food Bank is an emergency food program run by volunteers and operated under the auspices of the Daily Bread Food Bank. The program supplies food to individuals and families who have housing but whose income is not enough to make ends meet. There continues to be a constant need for canned goods such as soup, canned fruit, tins of meat, beans, pasta sauce. Thank you also to those who are leaving non-perishable food items – it helps to keep the shelves stocked. The Churches-on-the-Hill Food Bank depends on your continued support and has an ongoing need for non-perishable food items. These may be left in the baskets at the back of the church.
