Special Worship Services During the year we celebrate several special worship services in which the Latvian community thanks God for His acts of grace and mercy in the history of the Latvian people and our community here in Toronto. On the first Sunday of March, the Latvian community remembers Major Oskars Kalpaks and all those who fought valiantly in 1918-1919 and sacrificed their lives to secure a free Latvia. The service is distinguished by the presence of members of Latvian fraternities and their colours, marking the special role of fraternity members in Kalpak’s battalion and the battles for Latvian freedom In celebration of our Latvian heritage, an ecumenical worship service is usually held as part of the Latvian Song Festival programme. On the 18th of November, Latvians throughout the world remember the proclamation of a free Latvia in 1919 and give thanks to God for the gift of freedom. During the years of brutal and illegal Soviet occupation of Latvia (1943-1993), this memorial service was often very solemn, remembering those who still suffered under communist rule. However, after Latvia regained her independence in 1993, the mood of our November 18th worship has been one of promise and celebration. On the Sunday closest to June 14th, St. John’s congregation remembers the thousands of innocent victims of Soviet communist oppression who were deported during the terrible year of 1941 and in subsequent terror campaigns during the illegal Soviet occupation of Latvia. The Fourth Sunday of Advent is an informal morning worship service of hymns and readings, followed by the decoration of the Christmas tree and the altar area. It is a service for the whole family with young and old participating in the fun – and enjoying carols around the grand piano in the church, the mulled wine, hot chocolate and traditional Christmas treats as well!

Fotogalerija Christmas Pageant 2016 Ziemassvētku eglīte 2016.g. 11. decembrī "Mīļas Mammiņas" 2016 Fundraiser / atbalsta pasākums We finished our season on May 1, 2016 by supporting the "Mīļas Mammiņas" fundraiser for Latvian mothers and their newborn babies in Zemgale. We decorated our strollers and wagons. As the weather was uncooperative, we had an indoor walkathon, led by Rev. Dr. A. Gaide. Proceeds from the lunch, which was once again prepared by the Sunday School parents and teachers, went to this wonderful project. Donation forms were also available. Jāņa ev. 15:16 // Padome ir draudzes izpildu orgāns, kuŗu ievēl draudzes pilnsapulce. Padomē balstiesības bauda arī draudzes mācītājs un dāmu komitejas priekšniece. Padome no sava vidus ievēl draudzes priekšnieku, divus viņa vietniekus, kasieri un sekretāru. Šīs amatpersonas ir draudzes valde. Draudzes padome un valde ir atbildīgas kā par draudzes garīgo, tā materiālo labklājību. Tas prasa ļoti lielu brīvprātīgu darbu, ko šie draudzes locekļi ar kristīgas kalpošanas prieku sekmīgi ir veikuši gadiem ilgi. Pirmais draudzes priekšnieks bija Oskars Dzērvītis. Pēc viņa par draudzes priekšnieku nāca Alfreds Vanags, tad Žanis Rūtenbachs. Tad draudzes priekšnieks 26 gadus bija Jānis Koncis. Kopš 1995. gada priekšnieka pienākumus pilda Kārlis Jansons. Draudzes darbam sazarojoties un pieaugot, padomes locekļu skaits vairākas reizes ticis palielināts. Pašlaik padomē ir 24 locekļi. Padomei caurmērā ir 8 sēdes gadā, bet valdei vēl papildus 5. Īpašu uzdevumu veikšanai ir vairākas komitejas, piemēram, finanču. No padomes locekļu vidus izrauga arī Saulaines pārvaldi. Bez dievnama un Saulaines, draudzei piederēja arī draudzes nams, kur pa laikam atradās mācītāja dzīvoklis. Pirmo draudzes namu iegādājās 1956. gadā un tas atradās 50 Dewson ielā. Šo namu pārdeva 1967. gadā, iegūtos līdzekļus izlietojot dievnama celšanas parāda dzēšanai. 1973. gadā nopirka jaunu draudzes namu 12 Worthington kresentā. Šis nams tagad ir pārdots. KĀ BIŠU STROPĀ Dzīvojamā istaba mājas lejas stāvā, kuŗu mēs tai laikā apdzīvojām 50 Dewson ielā, Toronto – bija arī tēva darba istaba un draudzes kanceleja. Augšas stāvā dzīvoja igauņu mācītājs ar savu ģimeni. Pie tēva cilvēki nāca kārtot savas lietas gan rītā, dienā, gan vakarā, lūdzot palīdžību ģimenes problēmās, vai sakarā ar laulībām, kristībām, bērēm, jubilejām, meklējot dažādas apliecības, lūdzot palīdzību piederīgo izsaukšanai no Vācijas uz Kanadu. Vienmēr sveši cilvēki nāca un gāja. Pat ap divdesmit vīru lielās draudzes padomes sēdes notika mūsu mājā. Neatceros, vai tai laikā padomē būtu bijušas arī sievietes. Daudzi no šiem vīriem smēķēja un, sēdei ilgstot, gaiss mazajā guļamistabiņā gaiteņa otrā gala, kur es ar braļiem Pēteri un Jāni gulējām, bija krietni piedūmots. Daži no vīriem pat kūpināja cigārus, kuŗu smaka vēl nākamajā dienā bija krietni jūtama. Reizēm tai pašā vakarā notika arī draudzes dāmu komitejas sēde, jo mana māte bija komitejas vadītāja . Tad mazajā ēdamistabā, otrpus gaitenim no mūsu guļamistabas, dāmas sprieda savu spriežamo. Atceros, ka mēģināju gulēt, klausoties viņu runās un smieklos. Christian Education at St. Joh n's Growing in Faith!

Ansamblis St. John’s Church Vocal Ensemble Music at St. John’s It's hard to believe that the Vocal Ensemble of our congregation is entering its 38th season making music to the glory of God and the enjoyment of our members. These have been very rewarding years for the group. We have performed in various cities and countries over the years, both a Capella, or with string ensembles, or with the Rev. Dr. Anita Gaide accompanying us on the organ/piano. The vocal ensemble is a very important part of the spiritual life of our congregation. Thanks to our exceptional Director of Music Brigita Alks, we perform a broad range of repertoire in several different languages and styles. We are most grateful to Brigita for making those long journeys from Buffalo every week to teach us and make our lives that much richer. Ansambļa diriģente ir Brigita Alks. Mūsu sastāvā ir 22 dziedātāji un ērģelniece Dr. Anita Gaide. Dziedātāju skaitā ir Juris Ķeniņš, kas palīdz ar dziesmu aranžējumiem, īpaši stīgu ansambļa pavadījumiem. Mēģinājumi notiekās otrdienas vakaros, no 7 līdz 9. Gaidam papildus spēkus katrā balsī vienmēr. The vocal ensemble rehearses every Tuesday from 7 pm to 9 pm from September to June and also meets several times over the summer months for rehearsals.
